China consumer prices up 2.3% in April

BEIJING -- China's consumer price indexa main gauge of inflationgrew 2.3 percent year onyear in Aprilflat from a month earlierthe National Bureau of Statistics announced Tuesday.

China's producer price index (PPI), which measures costs for goods at the factory gateslid 3.4percent year on year in Aprilofficial statistics showed on Tuesday.

China's consumer prices grew 2.3 percent in March from one year earlierthe same as inFebruaryofficial data showed Monday.

The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflationshrank 0.4 percent in March fromFebruarythe National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement.

NBS statistician Yu Qiumei attributed the inflation growth mostly to high vegetable and porkprices.

Pork prices jumped sharply by 28.4 percent year on yearcontributing 0.64 percentage points ofCPI growthwhile vegetable prices skyrocketed by 35.8 percentaccounting for 0.92 percentagepoints of CPI growth.

Food prices soared 7.6 percent year on year while non-food inflation edged up 1 percent inMarch.

Since JanuaryCPI data have been calculated using a new comparison base that takes intoaccount new products and servicesreflecting a change in consumption patternsThe adjustmentslightly reduced the weight of foodwhich previously accounted for nearly one-third of the CPIcalculation.
